On Aldabra, an estimated 500 tons of plastic lie scattered over 50 km of coastline, carried by ocean currents from afar.
Instead than sending this legacy waste to landfills, Plastic Odyssey explored ways to give it a second life. During the expedition’s Indian Ocean stopovers, partners stepped up: Ocean Sole in Kenya can turn flip-flops into useful objects, while Brikole in the Seychelles can recycle rigid plastics.
On board, the team even crafted a bench and chairs from Aldabra’s collected plastic, a symbolic first step showing this waste can become a resource.
But lasting protection goes beyond cleanup. Stopping plastic at its source is essential. Preventing new waste from reaching Aldabra requires collective action: rethinking consumption and reducing single-use plastics.
UNESCO and Plastic Odyssey are partnering to combat plastic pollution in marine World Heritage sites through science-driven action, innovation and community-based solutions.
