Paul opens his letter to the Galatians with urgency and astonishment. The churches of Galatia were being troubled by false teachers who were distorting the message of grace and adding human effort to the finished work of Christ.
In these opening verses, Paul establishes his authority as an apostle sent not by men, but by Jesus Christ Himself. He reminds the believers of the true gospel — that Christ gave Himself for our sins to deliver us — and he issues a solemn warning: there is no other gospel.
This study lays the foundation for the entire letter. We will examine the purity of the gospel, the danger of compromise, and why altering the message of grace is not a small matter.
