Determining Oxidizing and Reducing Agents | Chem in 10 Online Chemistry Tutoring

The oxidizing agent in a redox reaction is the reactant that gets reduced (in other words, its oxidation number gets reduced), and the reducing agent in a redox reaction is the reactant that gets oxidized (in other words, its oxidation number increases. In a sample problem, I show you how to determine oxidation numbers, and to use that information to determine the species that is oxidized, also known as the reducing agent, and the species that is reduced, also known as the oxidizing agent.
