On the other hand, grain maize (corn) is grown for dry kernels. It takes longer to mature, usually 110–130 days depending on the variety and weather conditions. In this case, the farmer waits until the cobs are fully mature and grains are hardened with low moisture content. Here, grain size, cob development, and proper pollination are extremely important for maximum yield.

Fertilizer strategy also differs between both crops. Silage maize requires strong nitrogen application in early growth stages to promote lush green biomass. Balanced NPK is important, but nitrogen plays the most critical role. In grain maize, fertilizer management must support both vegetative growth and grain filling. Phosphorus is important at sowing for root development, while potassium helps in grain formation and disease resistance. Split nitrogen doses are usually more beneficial in grain maize.
