In this talk, Daniel J. Mills, a Ritsumeikan University professor and certified financial educator, explains how money, language learning, and AI can work together in a practical, real world way.
He begins with his own journey from arriving in Japan broke with student loans to reaching financial independence through saving, index fund investing, and US real estate. From there, he breaks down the core ideas of financial freedom in clear steps:
1. how to think about income, saving, and investing
2. why an emergency fund matters and how much you really need
3. the basics of the 4 percent rule and cash flow from assets
4. simple ways to get started with investing even if you do not feel confident with math.
Daniel then shows how he teaches these concepts to university students using a case study of a young woman in Kyoto, walking through her budget, retirement goal, and investment plan. Step by step, he adds AI into the process, from idea generation and planning through to checking and improving full financial plans, so students learn to use AI as a support tool, not a shortcut.
He also talks about the special challenges and opportunities for people living in Japan, especially Americans dealing with both US and Japanese tax rules, NISA, iDeCo, and overseas investing.
