Choosing the right transceiver for your network can feel like decoding a secret language, but it’s actually simpler than it looks.
In this video, ProLabs Engineer Ethan Walker breaks down the selection process into two easy-to-follow steps to ensure you get the perfect match for your infrastructure.
The 2-Step Selection Guide
Step 1: Match Your Fiber
The color of your cable jacket tells you almost everything you need to know about the fiber type and distance capabilities:
Multi-mode (Orange or Aqua): Ideal for shorter distances up to 500 meters. If this is your setup, you'll want SR (short-range) optics.
Single-mode (Yellow): Built for long-haul transmission. Depending on your distance, you’ll need:
FR: 2 kilometers
LR: 10 kilometers.
ER: 40 kilometers.
ZR: 80 kilometers or more.
Step 2: Match Speed and Form Factor
Your switch determines the speed and physical shape of the optic you need:
10G: SFP+.
40G: QSFP+.
100G: QSFP28.
400G: QSFP-DD.
400G and Beyond: OSFP.
Pro Tip: Always remember the golden rule of selection: Fiber Type ➡️ Speed ➡️ Reach.
