Kalmia latifolia - Mt Laurel was shown before but now is more open in this video and extremely showy. This is a wonderful understory shrub like rhododendron, American holly, and redbud.
This shrub was in bloom for almost a full month and when open, it had a fragrance that was sweet and musty. This stand of shrubs is nearly 100 years old because they have been here since the cemetery was founded in an old woodland. They typically grow in more acidic soil with a pH around 6-6.5.
If you have never been to the Laurel Highlands of Western Pennsylvania, I recommend going around June to see these in bloom. They are best seen along the Laurel Highland Hiking Trail. The upper canopy in the Laurel Highlands is red oak, chestnut oak, tulip trees, scarlet oak, hemlock, sugar maple and beech. The forest at Whitemarsh Memorial Park has many of these same species.
