Those familiar with historical keyboard composers will know that Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was one of the greatest of the 16th century. Working as an organist in Calvinist Amsterdam, he did not play for church services, but was instead employed by the city, and gave regular organ recitals for the public. He was a master improviser, and taught many great organists of the following generation, advancing keyboard music further than ever before.
It would therefore seem reasonable that Sweelinck could compose this beautiful and mournful Paduana Lachrimae – but in reality, this work is an arrangement and embellishment upon the famous song "Flow my tears" (i.e. Lachrimae) by English composer John Dowland, a contemporary of Sweelinck's. Here, Sweelinck preserves the essence of Dowland's work, with all six verses, to which he adds his own keyboard flourishes.
Paduana Lachrimae was probably intended for harpsichord, but I think it works wonderfully on organ, with pedals added for a stronger bass-line.
Performed on the J.A. Silbermann organ at Arlesheim Cathedral, Switzerland through Hauptwerk technology. My greatest thanks to Kim for filming the performance.
