Did you know that facial expressions are an integral part of American Sign Language? In fact, the expression you use when signing with friends, colleagues, and family can greatly enhance the meaning of the sign.

Facial expressions are important in ASL in part because they show your tone of voice and how you feel. And facial expressions also serve as punctuation marks when you’re communicating visually.

That’s why it’s so important for new ASL users to learn how to use facial expressions in ASL. And yet, it can be a challenge to get used to using your face when communicating, especially if you don’t come from a background where showing facial expressions is a major part of your communication style.
