(28 Sep 2021) Wearing masks and blowing smoke, beekeepers protested in front of Congress in Argentina to demand a stop at the wide ranging use of pesticides.
Protesters said the use of pesticides is killing hives across Argentina and reducing honey production by 50 percent.
Almost 80% of food depends on the pollination of bees, including fruit, vegetables, animal fodder, medicinal herbs and crops for industrial uses, such as cotton.
Without pollination by bees and other pollinating insects, the planet's biodiversity would be at peril.
Although honey bee hives have globally increased close to 45% during the last 50 years, declines have been reported in several locations, largely in Europe and Northern America, according to a UN report.
Urgent and wide-ranging efforts are needed to protect bees across wild, agricultural and urban habitats, said UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed in 2019.
