WAGNER'S NIGHTMARE - OUT APRIL 19
Daniel Orsen and Pierre-Nicolas Colombat perform Franz Liszt's "Romance Oubliée (dedicated to Hermann Ritter) in Rockport, Massachusetts. This video was captured during the recording sessions for "Wagner's Nightmare" - an album of music Richard Wagner would not like.
The Viola Alta was a 19-inch viola designed by Hermann Ritter, the first Solo Violist of the Bayreuth Festspiel Orchestra. Wagner insisted that his entire viola section play Ritter's giant Viola Altas, and numerous composers in Wagner's circle began to compose for the instrument, including Wagner's father-in-law Franz Liszt, who composed his Romance Oubliée with the Viola Alta in mind.
Special thanks to Carriage House Violins for lending us this anonymous 19th-century Viola Alta.
