How to overcome loneliness and depression amidst coronavirus? 2020 is going down in the history books. The virus is affect us all. It’s amazing how something in wuhan China can impact so many on the other side of the world, like in New York! And as the coronaries has spread it also leave us vulnerable to the virus of the mind - loneliness.
Social distancing and self isolation have become busy words surround the coronavirus. We have been encouraged to withdraw from social contact for fear of the spread of the corona virus. But this doesn’t come free of consequences either. Many are experience depression like feelings. Some are feeling alone and sad. Levels of anxiety are rising within our hearts. The cry of humanities hearts is being to sing together the chorus “I’m depressed. I’m lonely”.
Normally when there is a crisis our natural reaction is to reach out to friends, family, and our Catholic parish. But now we can’t. We are being asked to do something, self-isolate, which is completely contrary to our human nature. We are created for community and connection.
The problem is when we self-isolate, we become vulnerable to loneliness. If this happens, how can we overcome loneliness?
Overcoming loneliness is not like flicking on a light switch. There is no magic formula for this virus of the mind. These how to steps should not be consider an attempt to be the perfect fix. Please consider them as steps towards overcoming loneliness.
This video also does not address underline causes of feelings of loneliness and depression. Often traumatic events in our life leave us wounds. Sometime these wounds leave us susceptible to depression, anxiety depression and feeling lonely. True freedom can be found, but only by first dealing with the wounds caused by the traumatic events. True healing and overcoming loneliness is possible but only when the healing of these memories have been accomplished, and new habits of thinking are developed. Mental health is tricky thing to figure out. This is also why we need Jesus to be invited into these areas of our life.
One thing we have to remember is that being alone, is not the same as feeling lonely. Self-isolation is not equal to solitude. Jesus withdraw by himself. He did not isolate himself from others. He went off by himself to pray, but he did not get lonely.
We must understand what loneliness is. It is a diabolic lie that says, you are alone, unworthy and inadequate. These lies are enough to make anyone sad and depressed! The key to overcoming loneliness is to combat with faith in God. Why? Because Jesus said, “the truth sets you free”. So we must come to the truth, who is Jesus, in order to find conquer loneliness.
In this video Catholic Speaker Ken Yasinski goes over how to deal with loneliness by offering four practical calls to action.
