LXT Sub-Compact - Makita's new 18-Volt LXT Sub-Compact 3/8" Impact Wrench gives users 12-Volt tool size while allowing for 18-Volt users to stay in a single battery line.  The Makita XWT12ZB 3/8" Impact Wrench has a Brushless Motor with two-speed settings (0-1,300/0-2,400 RPM and 0-2,000/0-3,600 IPM) and up to 130 ft.lbs.of Max Torque.  The impact wrench is small and lightweight making it easy to use in almost any application, but really shines when used overhead.  Makita added a Reverse Rotation Auto-Stop Mode that stops reverse rotation only when the fastener is loosened enough to be removed by hand.  The dual L.E.D. lights can be turned off by holding the mode button and will remain off until turned back on.

There is a lot of good and useful items integrated into this impact wrench.  The reverse auto-stop is really nice and one of the few automatic modes on impact wrenches that I would use on a daily basis.  Having control of the LED lights is nice because they can be annoying when working around a lot if chrome or polished aluminum.  With all of this good, comes a little bad.  The rotation selector on this tool is simply too long and feels to be placed too low.  We found that we would accidentally push the button and accidentally have the impact wrench in reverse when moving it into tight positions.  When you have such a small tool, why make the direction of rotation switch be so large?  We also found that we could not change the modes of the tool without first pushing the trigger to turn on the tool and we had 20 seconds to make an adjustment.  That is not something we are used to and it would take some time to work that into our system.

Is Small Where It Is At?
In our YouTube video, we compare the Makita to some Milwaukee and Ingersoll Rand impact wrenches.  If you have not watched it, there are some great surprises in there.  While the Makita is smaller than the others that we looked at, it does have some disadvantages.  For example, the Milwaukee FUEL M18 impact wrench was only slightly larger, in many cases almost unnoticeable when in use, and it had almost twice the power.  The Milwaukee M12 and Ingersoll Rand 12-Volt tools had much smaller batteries and could slip into smaller areas, even though the head was a bit longer.  The Milwaukee M12 also performed almost exactly the same as the Makita and it is rated at 13 ft. lbs. less torque.  

So where does this tool shine?  It is very well built and lived through some serious abuse in the short time we had the tool.  It is small and it does add to Makita's growing 18-Volt platform.  There does seem to be a marketing race going on to have the largest 18 or 20-Volt tool platform.  The tool is also very lightweight and fairly powerful for its size.  having large hands makes the tool feel really small and as mentioned before, puts some of the controls in a poor position.

If you are a one brand kind of person, this tool is a must-have.  If you are willing to have multiple brands to pick the best from each one, we feel that going just a touch larger and doubling the power of the tool might be a great option.  Take a look at our video and leave a comment on how you feel about it.
