The first railroad in Southern California was in what is now the city of Los Angeles. Since that beginning, railroads became and remain important to transportation in and the economy of the area. Three major railroads began service Los Angeles before 1900 and prior to the completion of Union Station in 1939 downtown Los Angeles was the home to nine other railway stations. This talk explores the history of both intercity and commuter railroads int he greater Los Angeles area from their start in 1869 to the present day.
