STORYLINE:
Argentinean cardinal Jorge Bergoglio held a special mass in honour of Pope John Paul II on Monday.
Bergoglio characterised John Paul II as a man who died as "coherently" as he lived.
Among the estimated 4000 people attending the special mass were vice-president Daniel Scioli, president Kirchner´s Wife, Cristina Fernandez, bishops and diplomats.
The Buenos Aires Cathedral was filled to capacity and worshippers were left standing outside on the steps and crowding the streets causing severe traffic jams.
Referring to a 1970´s border conflict between Chile and Argentina, Bergoglio described John Paul II a man who got his hands dirty in order to, "save us from a war of fratricide."
Bergoglio is scheduled to depart for Rome on Wednesday to attend the pope's funeral and participate in the election of a new pope, something for which Bergoglio himself is considered a candidate.
