Kingsbridge South Devon is a small market town at the head of an estuary that flows in from Salcombe on the South Coast.
A very rural market town in 1940 with a population trying to carry on life far from the Second World War being so far West away from London and the South East where The Battle of Britain was fought.
The Air Ministry arrived in early 1941 to build an Advanced Landing Ground near Salcombe, RAF Bolt Head and a Radar Station RAF Hope Cove.
Then came a massive shock to the population when during early 1943 the Luftwaffe began many hit and run raids where they used the very fast Focke Wulf 190 with speeds of well over 300mph which could carry bombs and heavy machine guns to inflict serious damage. During these raids 21 people lost their lives in Kingsbridge and 16 in Salcombe.
This was just the start as Allied Troops and Ships gathered in Salcombe in preparation for D.DAY the Luftwaffe returned many times to attack these small towns.
