And now onto the weather. Many people around the country were reaching for their thick coats this morning, as a strong continental cold air mass sent temperatures plummeting nationwide. The lowest temperature registered in the country hit a mere 8.9°C, in the outlying island of Dongyin of the Matsu archipelago. But on Taiwan proper, it wasn’t much warmer. Over in Taitung’s Donghe Township, temps hit a nippy 11.1°C. Let’s hear more from the Central Weather Administration.

Under the influence of this strong continental cold air mass, the weather is getting quite cold in Northern Taiwan throughout the entire day. Highs generally stay below 14°C, with lows of between 10°C and 12°C. While we’re under the influence of the cold air mass, Northern and Central Taiwan will feel cool weather all day long. Residents in Southern Taiwan, Hualien and Taitung should pay special attention to large day-night temperature swings.

Forecasters say that it’s set to get especially chilly in Northern Taiwan, Miaoli, Yilan and Kinmen, which could see brief dips below 10°C. The coldest days in this spell will be Wednesday and Thursday. By Friday, temperatures may bounce back somewhat during the day. But the northeasterly winds won’t weaken until Saturday, which is when we can finally get a break from the cold and return to milder temperature. So for now, wrap up warm if you’re planning to be outdoors.
