The Battle of An Lọc is one of the three major battles of the Easter Offensive, 1972. 3 Communist Divisions (the 5th, 7th, and 9th) and 4 Regiments smashed into Bình Long province in III Corps of South Vietnam. These forces would eventually surround and try to destroy the ARVN 5th Divison at the provincial capital of An Lọc. As the Airborne, 21st, 25th, and 18th eventually joined the battle, An Lọc became the 2nd largest of the three main battles of the Easter Offensive, and developed into the largest siege of the entire war.

The Easter Offensive of 1972, or the Nguyễn Huệ Offensive and Mùa Hè Đỏ Lửa (Summer of Red Fire), was a massive Communist Offensive to try to destroy the Republic of Vietnam. Three massive corps-level battles were launched in Quảng Trị, Kon Tum, and Bình Long provinces. This offensive would become largely forgotten in mainstream American and English-speaking histories, as opposed to the Tết Offensive of 1968. However, this is a failure of history and it should never have been forgotten, as it marks a crucial turning point in the course of the war.

The Easter Offensive was the very first time the North Vietnamese attempted to utilize combined-arms warfare on a massive scale. For this offensive, the North Vietnamese were handsomely equipped by the Soviets with T-54s/T55s, APCs, ZSU-57s, 130mm and 122mm state-of-the-art howitzers, and the latest SA-7/AT-3 guided missiles. The mainstream understanding of the war is guerrilla warfare in the jungle with American patrols - this offensive completely rips that view of the war to shreds.
