CNCROi.com offers a host of custom products and production techniques, in this case, we'll review Solid Oak Domino Set Reclaimed Wood to High End Game.
Jon from CNCROi.com demonstrates how to create custom domino sets using reclaimed oak wood, sourced from a home renovation project. The oak was initially untreated but later painted white, which gave the wood a unique aesthetic. Jon integrated a design that includes the Chinese characters for numbers 1 to 6, adding a cultural and custom touch to the traditional domino game. The dominoes ended up being the same size as Jon's cell phone, which he found interesting, as sometimes projects align perfectly with existing items.
The process begins with planing the reclaimed oak planks, which Jon explains is straightforward. The planner smooths the surface of the wood, but it does not address the edges, which Jon chooses to handle with a bandsaw for efficiency. He then moves on to the cutting stage, where he initially considered using a laser for the entire project but ultimately decided against it. While a laser would work well for cutting through the oak, Jon preferred to use the bandsaw to achieve clean, non-burnt edges, ensuring a smoother finish.
Before committing to full-scale production, Jon tested the laser to check his settings. Although he had done laser work many times, it was essential to verify the depth, especially since the oak was not masked during testing. The test revealed that sanding was necessary due to the excess residue left from the laser, particularly with oak. Once the engraving was complete, Jon proceeded with branding the back of the domino pieces with his logo, using a laser engraving process that created a nice, deep mark on the surface.
The sanding process followed, which involved smoothing the oak to remove resin and other residues. Since oak is a dense wood, this process required significant effort. Jon was careful not to over-engrave the surface because too much depth would have made sanding more difficult. After sanding, Jon noticed the edges of the domino pieces were too sharp, so he decided to add a bevel. Using the sander at a 45-degree angle, he efficiently softened the edges, making the dominoes more comfortable to handle. While Jon could have used a router for this step, he found the sander to be a more practical tool for the task, aligning with his goal of efficient production.
Jon shares that his initial plan was to finish the dominoes with a coating to enhance the colors, but he ultimately chose not to, as the oak is a durable wood that handles wear and tear well. He knew that any surface finish would eventually wear off before the wood itself. Instead, Jon opted to leave the dominoes in their natural state, knowing that over time, they could easily be resanded and re-engraved if necessary. This flexibility is one of the benefits of working with wood, as it allows for easy maintenance and rebranding in the future.
