Alstroemeria (Peruvian Lily)
Alstroemeria, more commonly known as the Peruvian Lily or Lily of the Incas, is a vibrant and popular flower native to South America. Despite its name, it is not a true lily but belongs to its own family, Alstroemeriaceae.
It is highly valued by florists and gardeners for its beautiful blooms and exceptional vase life.
Key Characteristics:
Appearance: The flowers grow in clusters at the top of slender, upright stems. Each individual bloom is funnel-shaped and typically has six petals.
Markings: A hallmark of the Alstroemeria is the intricate markings on its inner petals. These petals are often streaked, speckled, or flecked with a darker, contrasting color, which adds to their exotic beauty.
Colors: They come in a wide spectrum of colors, including various shades of pink, red, orange, purple, yellow, and white.
Foliage: The plant has a unique feature where its leaves are "resupinate," meaning they twist on the stem so that the underside faces upward.
Vase Life: Alstroemeria is a favorite for bouquets because it is incredibly long-lasting as a cut flower, often looking fresh in a vase for up to two weeks.
Symbolism:
Due to its long-lasting nature, Alstroemeria is most commonly associated with friendship, love, and mutual support. The six petals are also sometimes said to represent six key virtues: understanding, humor, patience, empathy, commitment, and respect.
