Not to flex, but I could be a matador. Obviously, when I started applications I knew it was a long shot. Was riding pretty hard on my Extras and essays to carry me through, as well as my hard course load, all APs and Honors. In the end, GPA seems to have prevailed and off to another path to triumph we go.
My stats are as follows for those who are interested:
Unweighted GPA: 3.2
Weighted GPA: 3.7
AP exam scores;
AP euro: 4
AP USH: 4
AP Lang: 3
Extras:
3 years as a lifeguard
2.5 years as a varsity soccer player
2 years as captain of varsity soccer
5+ years as youth soccer referee (AYSO)
In the end, GPA really does seem like it is all that matters. As far as everything else I covered the bases. Leadership is shown amply, work ethic is shown through commitment to passions (work and soccer), work to make the community a better place, perseverance and adversity displayed (cerebral palsy, not being able to walk and not being able to read until 5th grade, which I worked at and surpassed to the point that I could be a leader and pass AP tests with decent marks). But obviously, that was not enough. So if you are still in High School and wish to go to a top school, just know that they look at you as a number first, a number on a 5 point weighted scale and a 4 point unweighted scale, before they look at who you are as a person. That is what I believe the takeaway should be.
In my eyes, it is still more important to develop yourself as a person over the 4 years you are given for high school, to develop your morals and personality, your perspective of life, etc. Grades can do a lot, college can do a lot, but not making it into the schools you want to get into is not the end of the world. Do not compromise your morals for short-term gain.
