In the early 1960s, Walt Disney was expanding his studio’s creative reach far beyond animation. Television had become one of his most powerful storytelling tools, and the newly color-broadcast anthology series Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color was designed to showcase live-action adventures from around the world. Among these productions was the charming horse-riding drama The Horsemasters, first presented in October 1961 as a two-part television story titled Follow Your Heart and Tally Ho.
The project began with a book. Disney purchased the rights to Don Stanford’s 1957 novel The Horsemasters, a story inspired by real experiences at a British riding school. Instead of filming on Hollywood backlots, Disney chose authenticity. The production moved to England, part of a broader period when the studio was creating live-action films across Europe.
Director William Fairchild led the production, with cinematography by Freddie Francis. Filming began in September 1960 and took place largely on location in the English countryside, including Surrey and the Baynards railway station area. The cast arrived weeks early to prepare — not to rehearse lines, but to learn how to ride.
The film starred Annette Funicello and Tommy Kirk, two of Disney’s most recognizable young performers of the era, alongside British actress Janet Munro and character actor Donald Pleasence. For Funicello, the production marked an important milestone — her first co-starring role in a feature-length Disney story.
Working with horses proved demanding and sometimes unpredictable. Some riding scenes required doubles, and injuries occasionally interrupted filming, a reminder that Disney’s live-action productions often involved real physical risk behind the scenes. Yet the English landscapes and authentic riding sequences gave the film a natural realism that studio productions rarely achieved.
The production also quietly launched an important musical collaboration. During the making of The Horsemasters, songwriting duo Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman wrote “Strummin’ Song” — the first song they ever composed for a Disney film. Their work impressed Walt Disney so much that it led to future projects, eventually including some of the studio’s most beloved musical films.
When the two episodes aired on NBC in October 1961, audiences saw a story about young riders training at an English horsemanship school — a coming-of-age adventure filled with friendship, discipline, and courage. Later, the episodes were edited together into a single feature-length presentation and screened theatrically in some countries, and decades afterward the film found new life on home video releases during the 1980s.
This feature presentation comes from the original theatrical cut, using Walt Disney’s presentation from the first episode as its introduction.
Today, The Horsemasters stands as a small but fascinating example of Disney’s early television filmmaking — a time when the studio experimented with international locations, blended television and cinema storytelling, and helped launch creative talents who would shape Disney history for decades to come.
