On July 3, 2025, the football world was shaken by tragic news: Portuguese national team forward and Liverpool player Diogo Jota died in a car accident in the Spanish province of Zamora.

The 28-year-old father of three, who married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, 11 days earlier, was killed alongside his brother André Silva when the Lamborghini they were travelling in veered off a road.

It's understood he was headed to Santander to catch a ferry to the Great Britain after being advised not to fly following lung surgery.

He was on his way to the northern Spanish port city of Santander to cross the ferry and reach the Great Britain that way and carry on with the car once he reached Britain. He was on his way to Liverpool with his brother.

The Lamborghini's tyre is believed to have blown out while overtaking on the A-52 by the town of Cernadilla, near Zamora in northwestern Spain, close to the border with Portugal.

The supercar came off the road, rolled and then burst into flames just after 12.30am (11.30pm UK time) on Thursday. The protective barrier on the side of the road was demolished. The emergency services were called but the brothers could not be saved and are said to have been identified by the vehicle's number plate.
