It hopefully will be of use to future aspiring trekkers or enthusiasts wishing to learn and appreciate what was, the most beautiful, life affirming adventure. Although I set off not knowing anyone, and on the day I finished, I was alone, the intervening 136 days was filled with such overwhelming beauty, companionship and fun, that as all thru' hikers can testify; it's so hard afterwards to put into words.

Many people unnecessarily become anxious with the plethora of route choices involved with this trek: it really isn't that bad as some bemoaners suggest. I really would't, in retrospect, think that endlessly researching it is at all necessary. Generally just plan a week ahead and everything just falls into place en-route. Having said that though, I have included my route that I took which includes many of the common alternatives, some homemade and a few which were very specific during snow bound Colorado and also a fire closures.

The most useful pre-trip info (and free) I gathered was from https://www.halfwayanywhere.com/ the least useful (and most expensive) was Yogi's book. I did a crib sheet with my itinerary with all the info I needed, it literally was on just one sheet of A4! The OneDrive word .docx link for it is at the top. On trail, the Guthook App was more than enough for mapping and logistics, but I did have Gaia too as a backup and to create new routes for example. This was very important around Colorado as it is very feature rich, with slope angle shading and multiple layers etc. It has also been recently updated to include an overlay of daily snowfall at all the SNOWTEL sites.

2019 was an unusual year for the CDT, Colorado snow pack was still severe when we arrived in June after a leisurely crossing of New Mexico, although there was a worry before leaving Europe that the rivers in NM wouldn't have subsided in time after much heavier rain than normal. Much monitoring on the Gila flow rate was done as it was many 100's of times the flow of 2018.

Some of the contemporaneous filming was also done by my trail family, and a few other excerpts have been borrowed where I thought it important, and, where I had an absence of mind to film when I was totally captivated by the beauty of it all.
