God's chastisements are not for moral sins but to correct us back onto our race of faith. If you lift these verses out of context they sound scary but in context they are very encouraging and reveal the heart of a loving father. When you see this, you'll never be able to read this Scripture the wrong way ever again!

5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

"My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
nor be weary when reproved by him.
6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and chastises every son whom he receives."
