Humphreys Peak, the highest point in Arizona, offers a rewarding yet challenging hike just north of Flagstaff. The trail starts from the Arizona Snowbowl parking lot, which is spacious but fills up quickly due to the hike’s popularity. It’s around 10 miles round-trip, with 3,300 feet of elevation gain, starting at a high altitude and climbing to the summit at over 12,600 feet. The trail is generally well-marked, with some gradual switchbacks and steeper sections, especially as you approach the summit ridgeline. You'll want to be prepared for variable conditions—bring layers, water, and be ready to turn around if storms roll in.

The first half of the hike takes you through the forest with scenic stretches of spruce and aspen trees, leading into the Kachina Peaks Wilderness, which holds spiritual significance for several Native American tribes. After about two miles, you’ll reach an overlook where you can catch your first glimpse of the expansive views. The second half of the trail gets tougher, with steeper climbs, a few false summits, and some rocky terrain. Once you're above the treeline, the views open up, and you'll follow trail posts up to the peak.

At the summit, you're rewarded with sweeping views, including the potential to spot the Grand Canyon on a clear day. The trail itself traverses a historic volcanic area, and there’s even a bit of history with wreckage from a B24 bomber crash nearby. Once you reach the top, take in the sights, have a snack, and then retrace your steps back to the trailhead. Be sure to respect the altitude and the weather, as conditions can change quickly at this elevation.
