Types of Tooth Decay – Which Type Do You Have?
The root cause of most dental problems is tooth decay.
In reality, tooth decay is caused by acids produced by bacteria that live in the mouth. These bacteria feed on food residues, and unintentionally release acids that cause tooth decay.
Types of Tooth Decay:
1. Class 1 Caries:
This type of tooth decay appears on the surface of the teeth.
It usually occurs when food gets trapped in the grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of molars and teeth.
This is commonly caused by processed foods like chips, biscuits, chocolate, and caramel – especially sticky foods that cling to the tooth surface, particularly when eaten before bed.
This is considered one of the safest types of tooth decay, as it's relatively easy for the patient to detect.
As soon as a person notices a black line or dark spot on the tooth surface, they can tell there's decay.
Also, for this decay to reach the tooth's nerve, it has to go through both the enamel and dentin layers, which makes it one of the easiest types to treat.
2. Class 2 Caries:
This type occurs between the teeth – known as interproximal decay or "tooth decay between molars."
It’s considered one of the most dangerous types because it’s hard to detect.
In fact, even some dentists may struggle to spot it without an X-ray.
This decay usually affects two adjacent teeth rather than just one. About 80% of the time, both teeth will have decay, as food gets stuck between them, and the bacteria feeding on it release acids that damage both teeth.
This type progresses quickly to the nerve, as it's difficult to clean, and toothbrushes can't easily reach these areas.
So, how do you clean between your teeth? With dental floss.
If you're wondering what’s more important: brushing or flossing? Flossing wins, because it cleans the areas that toothbrushes can’t reach.
3. Class 3 Caries:
This is similar to Class 2 but affects the front teeth.
It’s usually easier to detect, as the dark spot between the front teeth is often visible.
4. (Traumatic Damage – Not True Caries):
This type is not caused by decay, but rather by a fracture or trauma to the tooth – often due to an impact.
It commonly affects the front teeth.
5. Class 5 Caries:
This type of decay occurs along the gumline of both front teeth and molars.
