2022 is the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, declared by the UN General Assembly in 2017. It seeks to raise awareness and draw attention to the role that men and women play in food security, nutrition, poverty eradication and the sustainable use of natural resources.
For thousands of years, artisanal fisheries have been the pillar of coastal communities in Africa. Today, it mobilises more than 10 million men and women across the continent, feeds about 200 million Africans, and contributes to the eradication of hunger and poverty.
