MCA likely to pitch for hosting Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare tourneys
MUMBAI: The Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) preferred choice for a curtailed 2020-21 domestic season seems to be the fourth option that the BCCI presented the state associations with on Sunday: Hold the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 and Vijay Hazare Trophy tournaments, while giving the Ranji Trophy a skip this time.
In an e-mail to all its state units, the Board had presented them with four options for a truncated domestic cricket season due to Covid-19. Option 1: Only Ranji Trophy; Option 2: Only Syed Mushtaq Ali T20; Option 3: Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali T20; Option 4: Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
"Playing the Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare tournaments is the best option this time for all the state associations in India. Most of us in the MCA Apex Council are on the same page on this option. This will give maximum chances to all the domestic players. Most of the players who play in the Ranji also feature in the Vijay Hazare, while the Mushtaq Ali will give an opportunity to those aspiring to play in the IPL to impress the franchises ahead of the grand IPL auction," a reliable source in MCA told TOI on Monday.
Explaining a few other reasons for choosing this option, the source said: "We've a short window to conduct domestic cricket before the next IPL. These tournaments will fit in easily. It will be easier to build a bio-bubble," he said.
