Denis Johnson is an author you may not have heard of and you may not think you want to read a book that involves murder, alcohol, rape, death row and mental degradation but it is truly one of the best books I have ever read. A writer who observes the fringes of society and manages to write about terrible things with a beauty, poetry or precision that illumintes the reader - that's one to cherish.
