PERSEPOLIS is an animated drama based on Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novels. It follows a rebellious and outspoken young Iranian girl (Satrapi) growing up during and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The film captures her struggles under an oppressive regime, her teenage years in exile in Austria and her eventual departure to France. The success of PERSEPOLIS established Satrapi as one of the most widely read Iranian authors in the world, and her role in co-directing the film adaptation led to her becoming the first woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
