There is nothing artisanal about it. It is for meant to meet the needs of the people.
We went to the Saturday market in our small Tuscan town of Impruneta. Saturday is not the standard day for a market. It could be any day of the week, but Saturday is rather convenient. This is not a tourist market. It is a market for the people of Impruneta. In the US we would call an outdoor market like this a farmer’s market. However, here, in a small town, you could not quite say that. The reason being that the market offers more than just food.
Small Tuscan towns, like ours, are small and, therefore, limited in what you can purchase in town. There is no Target or Walmart. There is Amazon though. In any case, along with produce and food, the market has clothing and housewares. This market is almost like a farmer’s market meets a swap meet but on very small scale. It is bringing the needed items the town lacks on a daily basis on a weekly basis. It is far from a “superstore” but it enables you to not have to leave town to get the majority of your essentials.
