Short lecture on postulate 1 of quantum mechanics.
A postulate is a statement that is not proven, but assumed to be true and judged on the validity of its conclusions. Postulate 1 of quantum mechanics states that the state of a quantum system is completely specified by the wavefunction, which is a function of both space and time. The complex conjugate of the wavefunction times itself and a small volume element is the probability of finding the particle within that volume element. In order to meet these criteria, the wavefunction must be "square integrable", giving a finite value for the integral of its square magnitude over all space.
