Demons destroy Floyd
By CHARLIE STOTT
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Christiansburg Blue Demons gave notice Friday night that they are a force to be dealt with by blasting Floyd County 41-0. The Demons came up with big plays offensively, defensively and in the kicking game as they opened their season in the non-district game against the Buffaloes. Four different players scored for Christiansburg as the Demons rolled up 318 total yards. And the Demons' defense was superior, limiting the inexperienced Buffaloes to just 98 yards a and intercepting two passes. The special teams also came through, coming up with a Floyd County fumble on the opening kickoff, which led to one touchdown, and blocking a punt in the second quarter to set up another score.
"They're a fine ball club, but we made it too easy for them in the first half. Then in the second half they just ran us into the ground," Floyd coach Winfred Beale "We gave them too many big plays." Yet, winning coach Mike Cole wasn't completely satisfied with his team's performance. "Anytime you score 41 points and shut out the other team, you've got to be pleased. But we've still got a lot of things we need to work on. We've got a lot of rough edges." A glaring negative spot for Christiansburg was the 115 yards in penalties the Demons accumulated.
And Cole said the offensive line still needed work despite leading the Christiansburg runners to 216 rushing yards. That came although Jody Martin, who gained more than 1,000 yards a year ago, carried the ball only: seven times because of an illness. Martin showed what he could do on the Demons' opening drive, picking up 29 yards the first time he touched the ball. Six plays later, he scored from a yard out to stake the Demons to a 7-0 lead with less than three minutes gone. He didn't carry the ball again until the third quarter.
After Ray Musselman’s interception gave Christiansburg the ball on Floyd’s 24-yard line, Tim Martin needed only two carries to find the end zone, putting the Demons ahead 26-0 against a relentless defense. Floyd’s runners managed just 58 yards, and quarterback John Gallimore was under constant pressure, completing only six of 17 passes for 39 yards. The Buffaloes’ defense barely had time to set before Christiansburg scored, with drives lasting 38 seconds, 52 seconds, 1:53, 2:55, and 4:27. Fullback Frankie Parker powered in for a two-point conversion, while Martin connected with Larry Helms for 26- and 25-yard touchdowns. Reserve tailback Jerome Wesley led all rushers with 83 yards and added a late score. Leon Martin kicked three extra points and returned an interception 43 yards for another touchdown. Facing a shortage of returning skill players from last year’s 6-3-1 squad, Floyd’s offense never found its rhythm.
