In this keynote, Dr. Belharouak analyzes the opportunities for Morocco to develop a competitive lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄ – LFP) battery industry in support of electric mobility and electrification. The talk highlights how advanced research, manufacturing science, and innovation ecosystems can accelerate the emergence of a local and regional battery value chain.

Drawing on the experience of the U.S. Department of Energy Battery Manufacturing Facility (BMF) at ORNL—one of the world’s largest open-access battery R&D platforms—the presentation covers advanced battery materials, electrode formulation, coating technologies, and high-performance cell architectures. The role of cutting-edge characterization tools, including advanced microscopy and neutron science, is also discussed as a key enabler of next-generation battery manufacturing.

This keynote was delivered at the International Conference on Sustainable Energy Systems (ICOSES 2025), a global forum focused on renewable energy, electrification, energy storage, and clean technology innovation.
