Over the past 20 years Ascension Eagles (AEC) cheerleading programmes have helped thousands of children in one of London’s most deprived boroughs not only improve their health but also make better life choices.

By combining cheerleading with teaching life and leaderships skills we’re helping young people to become great citizens and role models, not just great athletes.

Our busy training and performance schedules help to keep young people off the streets and actively engaged; cheerleading also builds their resilience as they learn to cope with adversity and appreciate that success only comes with discipline and commitment.

HOW THE FUNDING WILL HELP OUR COMMUNITY
We’re applying for £10,000 from the Aviva Community Fund, because we want to do even more to give our athletes life skills and leadership skills which will help them to reach their full potential and achieve greater success in their everyday lives.

Winning funding will mean that we can achieve our vision of delivering an academic support programme for our athletes, delivered by an education specialist, designed to improve our athletes’ English and comprehension skills.

We believe this is crucial, given that these are increasingly important aspects of the school curriculum and the fact that English is not the first language for many of our athletes.

Our education specialist would:
• provide weekly mentoring support sessions for twenty of our athletes with the greatest need, following the relevant examination body’s curriculum and working closely with each athlete’s school. Each child will be supported to set and work towards their own specific academic goals
• create educational resources, so that all of our athletes at Key Stages three and four will have access to materials to help them improve their English and comprehension skills, and promote a greater enjoyment of reading.

This funding will allow us to take another step towards helping our young people to achieve their full potential - academically, socially and physically. With greater academic achievements, enhanced employability and better health these young people can become good role models for others of their generation, and are more likely to make a positive contribution to society.
