Behavioural Genetics: Understanding Individual Differences 🧬✨
Why do individuals differ in personality, intelligence, and behaviour—even when they share much of the same genetic material? In this video, we explore how behavioural genetics investigates the origins of individual differences, and the complex interplay between genes and environment in shaping human development.
Although 99.9% of human DNA is identical, the remaining 0.1%—approximately 3 million base pairs—varies between individuals. These variations, known as polymorphisms, arise from mutations over generations and contribute to differences in traits ranging from temperament to cognitive abilities.
Genetic influences establish a range of developmental possibilities, but it is the interaction with environmental factors that determines outcomes. Behavioural genetics highlights three key ways in which genetic makeup shapes and is shaped by the environment:
🔸 Passive gene-environment correlation: For example, parents with a genetic predisposition for high intelligence may provide enriched environments (e.g., books and educational activities) that further foster intellectual development.
🔸 Evocative gene-environment correlation: A child's genetically influenced traits (such as sociability) can elicit specific responses from others, reinforcing certain behaviours.
🔸 Active gene-environment correlation: Individuals actively select environments that align with their genetic tendencies—such as an introverted child seeking out quiet spaces.
Importantly, genes rarely account for more than 50% of the variance in complex traits, emphasising the crucial role of environmental experiences in human development.
📌 In this video, we examine:
✅ How behavioural genetics explains individual differences
✅ The influence of genetic polymorphisms on development
✅ How nature and nurture interact through gene-environment correlations
✅ Why understanding these dynamics is essential for developmental psychology
