Astronomy goes back for as farther than recorded human history. Human observation has focused on what we can see with our eyes, or the visible range of light. That leaves a vast majority of the electromagnetic spectrum out of the equation that has only become accessible in the last hundred years. Submillimeter astronomy is one of the last frontiers in observational astronomy, and it focuses on a small range in the microwave range of light. This has been largely unexplored due to the difficulty of observations and the complexity of the equipment necessary to collect data. We will explore what this has led to and how one manages to observe this particular frequency of light!
Mimi Fuchs is a Telescope System Specialist for East Asian Observatory's James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, the world's largest single-dish telescope that operates in submillimeter wavelengths. During the show, Mimi will discuss this fascinating field of submillimeter astronomy and the new discoveries it has provided, her career path, and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope! Learn about how this telescope helped provide data for the first ever image of a black hole and how it shed some light on the mystery of Betelgeuse's recent dimming.
