This is a quick and easy mod to help make your 80s car a little more aesthetic.
Cars from the 1980s were equipped with large, low-impact bumpers due to strict federal safety regulations that required vehicles to withstand low-speed collisions (typically 2.5 to 5 mph) without damaging safety-related components. These bumpers were mounted on shock-absorbing struts or brackets and often stuck out far from the body, giving them a bulky appearance.
A popular and easy "free bumper mod" involves removing or modifying the bumper shocks or brackets—usually by compressing them, drilling holes to release gas or fluid (in hydraulic or pneumatic shocks), and pushing the bumper closer to the body before securing it. This simple DIY mod improves the car’s aesthetics by reducing the bumper's silhouette, giving it a sleeker, more modern look without major costs.
