The Château de Spesbourg is a ruined castle that dominates the valley above the village of Andlau, in the Bas-Rhin department of France. The castle was constructed between 1246 and 1250 by Alexander of Stahleck-Dicka, Vogt to Andlau Abbey. In 1386 it became the property of the family von Andlau.

Built on a granite promontory at Rothmannsberg, at an altitude of 451m, the Spesbourg dominates the Andlau valley. Most historians of the castle retain 1246-1250 as the dates of its construction, and E. Hering attributes it to Alexander de Stahleck-Dicka, then attorney of Andlau Abbey.

However, the first written mention of the castle dates back only to 1322.

The general appearance is reminiscent of the 13th century castle with a dungeon of around 24 m which can only be accessed through a high gate.
But the North side of the attack does not have the usual pointed profile that was exposed as early as 1200 to the assailant to deflect projectiles. Quite the contrary, the Spesburg offers only a wide flat wall, a “shield wall” whose thickness, curiously, is indistinguishable from the East and South walls.

The builder made the best use of the available space on the rock and placed the stately home on the east side, sheltered from the elements, but militarily fragile. This dwelling still has beautiful tracery in pink sandstone on the second floor.
All the outbuildings, turned to the West and to the South, reveal in their upper part the capitals of a fireplace. The general equipment, very neat, testifies to the ease of the owners of the time.

These elements give Spesbourg the characteristics of a manor house which sacrifices the military imperatives of the 13th century. to the necessities of the residence of a noble family of the 14th century.
