The Beauty of Gallay’s first sonata for horn and cello lies in the effortless symmetry of the structure. The exposition of the first movement consists of two periods built from four nicely rounded almost egg shaped antecedent and consequent phrases. Like the exposition the periods of the development start with the four bar aesthetic but use a sigh motif with quickly changing harmonies to halt the period and extend the climax. The cyclic nature of the sonata form makes the repeated material of the recapitulation seem like a fresh take on an established idea.
