Metal Slug: Awakening's story continues the series' classic conflict, with the Regular Army (Marco, Fio, etc.) fighting General Morden, who is now seeking ancient Egyptian power in the Kemut region to resurrect a pharaoh, requiring the heroes to collect magical gems to stop him while battling new supernatural threats and exploring the mysterious "Midnight Triangle" and "Sky Islands". It blends familiar characters and run-and-gun action with 2.5D visuals, deeper character skills, and new modes, expanding on the lore with new environments, enemies, and overarching narratives about dangerous energy and ancient secrets.
