New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has spoken out against RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s upcoming event at Madison Square Garden.
Mamdani said he does not support the rally but added that he was unsure whether New York City has the legal jurisdiction to cancel a private event.
Bhagwat is scheduled to address around 5,000 members of the Indian diaspora at Madison Square Garden on August 29 as part of the RSS centenary-year global outreach programme.
Mamdani, who is New York City’s first Indian-American mayor, said his opposition was connected to his belief in a pluralistic and secular India and expressed concern over what he described as an exclusionary political movement.
The controversy has also triggered opposition from several interfaith and civil rights organisations, which have urged Madison Square Garden to cancel the event.
