Information about the area

Johanngeorgenstadt is a small town at the German-Czech border with a population of roughly 5,000. There are several mountains and ski areas in the area. Johanngeorgenstadt's mountain rescue team is also closest to a larger ski area across the border so they regularly respond to calls on Czech territory. The Czech mountain rescue team needs approximately 10 minutes to that specific location.


About this Polaris

Johanngeorgenstadt's mountain rescue team wanted something better than regular mountain rescue vehicles where patients were out in the cold. Their main priority was to be able to transport patients inside a warm vehicle. They also needed something that could deal with the terrain. Eventually they ended up converting this Polaris into a mountain rescue "ambulance" (of course they transport patients to a regular ambulance after leaving difficult terrain).
Getting this Polaris XP 1000 UTV ready for its new task wasn't easy. Especially German bureaucratic nonsense and idiotic over-regulation almost made it impossible since Polaris vehicles are classified as a tractor-like commercial use vehicles under German law and it is not allowed to use such vehicles as ambulances. They had to arrange tons of special permits just to be able to legally place this vehicle into service.

The vehicle features blue and amber warning lights, a siren, illumination lighting, a stretcher and a seat in the back as well as some medical supplies. The wheels on this UTV can also be swapped with chains.

Personally I really like such special vehicles and interesting solutions. They've done a very well job with that vehicle!
