Transgender community in Kashmir is facing a tough situation during the ongoing lockdown following the eruption of COVID-19 pandemic. Kashmir has faced tough times due back to back lockdowns since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5 2019. The pandemic has dealt a blow to their livelihoods rendering most of them jobless. The transgender community of Kashmir comprising not more than 4000 members have traditionally remained marginalized. Most of them are discriminated against and stereotyped in the role of matchmakers. They say a meagre monthly assistance of one thousand rupees announced earlier by the government is inadequate. Some volunteers have now helping them by providing free rations to tide over the crisis during the lockdown.
