While much of the world’s attention at the United Nations this week has been focused on debates and diplomacy, a powerful side event brought humanity to the heart of Geneva.
On Friday, October 31st, on the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council’s Social Forum 2025, an inspiring discussion took place under the theme —
“Realizing Human Rights through Education and Healthcare for Children in Conflict Zones.”
The event was organized by Humanity First, an international humanitarian organization known for serving mankind across sixty-six countries since 1995.
Opening the session, Farida Shaheed, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education, outlined the urgent challenges facing millions of children deprived of learning opportunities due to conflict and displacement.
She emphasized that education is not a privilege, but a right — even in times of war.
Prof. Muhammadou M.O. Kah, Ambassador of The Gambia to the United Nations in Geneva, highlighted the growing barriers to education in conflict regions, stressing the moral responsibility of the international community to act.
Other distinguished speakers included Sitara Brooj Akbar, a cancer researcher from the University of Oxford; Pradeep Wagle, Chief of the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Section at the OHCHR; Kate Takes, Legal Advisor at Children Not Numbers; and Dr. Aziz Hafiz, Chairman of Humanity First UK, alongside Human Rights Consultant Anwar Mehmood Ur Rehman.
Diplomats, intellectuals, civil society leaders, and journalists participated in the discussion, all united by one message — that education and healthcare are the foundation stones of human dignity and sustainable peace.
For nearly three decades, Humanity First has delivered hope through healthcare, education, disaster relief, and sustainable development — living up to its motto: Serving Mankind. In a world still torn by conflict, their message in Geneva was simple yet profound — when we protect a child’s right to learn and to live, we protect the future of humanity itself.
