The crash occurred on January 18, shortly after an Iryo train departed Málaga for Madrid. The derailed train crashed onto an adjacent track, triggering a deadly collision with another oncoming train.

At least 21 people have been killed and several others critically injured. Emergency services rushed to the site as dramatic visuals showed passengers escaping through windows of tilted carriages. Rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended as investigators probe the cause of the crash.

Spain’s transport minister has termed the accident “terrible,” saying it was highly unusual for such a derailment to occur on a straight, recently renewed track. Rescue operations continue as the nation mourns one of its deadliest rail tragedies in years.
