"Lucky Hens Rescue" - A film about a brilliant project that has re-homed 2,000 ex battery hens and chickens over the last 20 months. This film features a Sean O'Loughlin, captain of Wigan Rugby League team interviewing a chicken! - got to be worth a look.
In the middle of December, 2011 I worked on a film project with Alison Thorpe, the inspiration behind "Lucky Hens Rescue" in Wigan. I had a great couple of days, met some lovely people - fair enough some of them were, shall we say - a little eccentric. They came from all walks of life but the thing that brings them together is that they are all passionate about doing what they can to improve the quality of life of ex battery chickens.
The whole thing started a couple of years ago when Alison wanted some chickens and decided that ex battery farm chickens were her poultry of choice! She contacted a local battery farmer and took possession of a handful of hens. Soon she was selling their eggs to friends and family and using the money to buy more ex battery chickens. By then the die was cast and since that time her mission in life has been to rescue as many ex battery chickens as possible.
Up to date Alison and her long-suffering husband Dane (luckily he does like eggs) and her daughter Amber have rescued over 2,000 chickens in around 20 months. Amber bought two of her own ex battery chickens with her own money straight, from the battery farmer. Alison intends to carry on with "Lucky Hens Rescue" even after egg farming moves into a new and supposedly more humane era - though Alison doesn't think the new approach is much better than the old one!
I loved my time at "Lucky Hens Rescue", I enjoyed the characters I met - like I said, some eccentric, some dare I say it a little bit "bonkers", at least in connection with chicken related matters. O.C.D. is very prevalent in this tightly knit community (Obsessive Chicken Disorder). I was very taken with the chickens themselves, who despite their ordeal seem to adjust very well to a new, loving, free-range lifestyle. They were very placid and really seemed to enjoy TLC, despite how they have been previously treated by the human race.
The whole project had a gentle, nice, naive and innocent feel to it and I felt very positive towards the re-homers who were trying to make amends in a small way for the cruelty that battery hens have experienced and will continue to face in the future. Seeing the birds chilling out in the December rain, without a care in the world was a very uplifting experience. For the chickens with not many feathers left, Alison has wooly jumpers for them to wear - no I am not kidding! Well done to Alison and her army of re-homers.
This film is one of three produced by Open Door Multimedia production for "Lucky Hens Rescue". They are all available via You Tube. Open Door Multimedia is an independent film maker that is run by Howard Jackson. We make films of any description and have worked with a very wide range of customers from Rathbone, a major national youth charity with an annual budget of £34million, through St.Helens Chamber, small businesses including local dentists, plumbers (quite similar really) and voluntary and not for profit organisations with tiny, tiny budgets. We also specialise in heritage projects and recent work includes a historic film on "Haaf Netting on the Solway" - an ancient form of Salmon fishing that dates back 1,000 years. You can view a lot of our work on the Open Door Multimedia website.
