How many people lived in Ireland in ancient times? This is a good question, as demography influences every aspect of how a society functions. However, the answer has always been something of a mystery. In this talk, we will see how aggreged information from thousands of archaeological excavations can led to a new and detailed understanding of the ebb and flow of human populations, opening insights into why cultures functioned, migrations, and how the landscape itself evolved in response to differing levels of human activity over the millennia.
Dr Rowan McLaughlin is a researcher in Maynooth University, applying statistics and mathematical modelling to the rich archaeological record from Ireland. His background is in archaeological science and palaeoecology, and has worked as a field archaeologist and as a postdoctoral researcher in Queen's University Belfast, The Catalan Institute for Human Palaeoecology and Social Evolution, and the British Museum.
