New York, 1741. A city on edge. One spark was all it took.
When a series of mysterious fires broke out across lower Manhattan in the spring of 1741, colonial New York descended into a paranoia that would rival the Salem Witch Trials. In a city where one in five people were enslaved — the largest slave population in the colonial North — fear quickly turned into accusation. And accusation turned into death.
A 16-year-old indentured servant named Mary Burton walked into court and gave testimony that shook the city to its core. Her words triggered one of the most terrifying episodes in American history — a mass conspiracy trial that sent 34 people to their deaths. Seventeen Black men were burned alive at the stake. Thirteen more were hanged. Seventy enslaved people were deported to Caribbean plantations. And the physical evidence? Almost none.
Was there a real conspiracy to burn New York to the ground? Or did fear, racism, and political ambition create monsters where none existed? New York 1741 holds up a mirror to colonial America — and what it reflects is deeply unsettling.
This is the untold history of a city that needed someone to burn.
